The traditional art of mule and horse packing was based around the Sawbuck pack saddle. Uncountable numbers of miles and an unimaginable amount of tonnage was moved using Sawbucks. Trailhead Supply’s Sawbuck pack saddle is built to keep those Sawbuck enthusiasts packing for years to come.
We start with a hand built tree using only quality kiln dried pine bars with solid 1-3/4”oak cross bucks. We then use US tanned Herman Oak leather and build the finest Leather rigging you can find on a Sawbuck today. The rigging straps are 1-1/4” wide and wrap the bucks for added strength and support. Both the breast collar tugs and spider straps are one inch wide. Our hand cut contoured breast collar is lined with soft latigo leather and then edged to help avoid rubbing and chafing your stock. The contour design of our breast collar unlike the standard straight cut design found on most pack saddles keeps the breast collar from riding up into your stocks neck on those long uphill pulls; thus allowing for easier breathing.
The only breeching we will use on a Trailhead Supply pack saddle is a rolled breeching. A rolled breeching is more forgiving on your pack stock. If you saddle isn’t adjusted quite right or it slips forward while running down the trail the chance of rubbing and chafing is greatly decreased when using a rolled breeching. All hardware on our sawbuck pack saddle is brass plated for both years of maintenance free use and a great look for years to come. Available on a humane tree. Cinch not included.
